Grown naturally and dried by the sun in Auroville, India, our Spirulina has a pleasant taste and is packed with 60% bio-available protein. Spirulina has large amounts of iron and beta-carotene (helping to keep eyes and skin healthy). Spirulina is great for detoxing as it chelates heavy metals from the body and is known to reduce bad cholesterol.
Where Does It Come From?
In 1968, delegates from 124 nations came together on a bare piece of earth in Tamil Nadu, India in order to create a place that belonged to all people, a place without borders - a place where it doesn't matter your creed or colour or background. This place is called "Auroville".
Auroville was created with a 4 point charter at it's core:
- Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
- Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
- Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
- Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.
Our Spirulina is grown with love in Auroville.
Spirulina Sprinkles are made from the dried Spirulina flakes before they are crushed into powder. They have to be tried to believe, they honestly taste great! Eat by the handful or use as a seasoning. Our favourite desk snack.. only problem is they disappear far too quickly!
The Best Spirulina In The World?
Auroville Spirulina is grown without pesticides, herbicides or GMOs and it is sun dried naturally. Most Spirulinas are spray dried but by sun drying it we preserve the vital natural energy contained in the Spirulina.
You can really taste the difference in this natural Spirulina... finally a Spirulina that doesn't taste horrible!
The Process That Makes The Difference
The Spirulina is grown in shallow ponds in rural India. The ponds are stirred each day to encourage photosynthesis. The water is kept at a high alkalinity to ensure other algaes do not grow in the ponds.
Once the Spirulina is dense, the water is pressed and strained and the Spirulina becomes a paste. It is then dried in the sun. Air drying creates a far more pleasant flavour and aroma to the Spirulina.
Is It Organic?
Although we do not use any herbicides, pesticides, or GMOs, our spirulina is not organic certified. Please note that the most prestigious spirulina farm worldwide in the USA and Hawaii are also not organic certified, while spirulina coming mainly from China is organic certified.
The main issue is nitrate, an essential nutrient that has to be added to the growing medium. When nitrates are heated to high temperatures they can turn into nitrites which have recently been found to be carciogenic. After harvesting the spirulina is washed with (salted water) and all the minerals and salts from the growing medium (including the nitrate) are washed out.
What are Nitrates? Nitrates are compounds consisting of Nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Most nitrates in your diet are naturally occurring, coming mostly from vegetables.
The adding of nitrates means the Spirulina can not be classified as Certified Organic, in all other aspects of the cultivation, it would meet the requirements for organic certification.
Reduces Bad Cholesterol
Spirulina has been found to assist with the managing of bad cholesterol (LDL). Yet the Spirulina doesn't appear to reduce the good cholesterol (HDL).
|In one study 15 male volunteers were given 4.2 grams of Spirulina per day. Researchers concluded that not only had the bad cholesterol reduced "significantly" but the fat in the arteries of the volunteers' had also decreased.|
|In a second study the volunteers were given 4 grams of Spirulina per day. The researchers concluded that not only had the bad cholesterol reduced but also a number of other indicators of heart issues had also reduced (blood cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol). They also found that the good cholesterol increased over the same period and the volunteers lost excess weight.|
60% easy-to-digest vegetable protein
Our Spirulina is packed with easily-digestible vegetable protein and contains all the essential amino acids. The essential amino acids are known as 'essential' because we must have them in our diet as the body cannot produce them itself.
As Spirulina has no cellulose in its cell walls it is easily digested and assimilated by the body. It is also not a meat product so you avoid the cholesterol that comes with meat proteins.
Natural Beta Carotene (provitamin A)
Spirulina is the richest source of natural beta carotene, ten times more concentrated than in carrots. Beta carotene is a very important antioxidant which has been shown to keep your skin healthy and it plays a vital role in eye health.
Gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA)
There is a rare essential fatty acid that is generally only found in Mother's Milk known as GLA. GLA is important for the creation of hormones that control many functions in your body and it helps your body deal with inflammation and skin conditions.
Naturally high in iron
Iron is essential to build a strong immune system, and yet iron deficiency is the most common mineral deficiency. Studies show that the iron in spirulina is absorbed 60% more efficiently than from iron supplements.
High in Vitamin B-12 and B Complex.
Spirulina is the richest source of B-12, richer than beef liver. Spirulina is very popular amongst vegetarians because B-12 is difficult to obtain from non meat sources. B-12 is necessary for the development of red blood cells and a B-12 deficiency can cause a range of negative implications.
Packed with Chlorophyll
Spirulina contains 1% chlorophyll, among the highest levels found anywhere in nature. Chlorophyll is believed to be a cleansing and detoxifying nutrient.
