Our Organic Certified Inca Berries (aka Golden Berries) come straight from Peru where they have been grown for millenias. These delicious little yellow fruits are bursting with flavour and nutritional benefit. Some say they taste like a cross between pineapple and kiwi fruits.
High In Dietary Fibre
Two handfuls of inca berries provide half of an adult's daily fibre (16g). That's more than two salad sandwiches on wholemeal bread! Fibre promotes gut health and aids in lowering cholesterol by slowing down digestion.
Anti-inflammatory & Anti-cancerous
We came across two scientific studies that looked at the effect on a chemical derived from inca berries on cancer cells called 4β-hydroxywithanolide (4βHWE). Both of these studies found promising results. One of the research papers that was published in 2010 in the Biomed Central Journal found that that 4βHWE reduced lung cancer cells. "We demonstrated herein that golden berry-derived 4βHWE had a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of H1299 lung carcinoma cells" (full article).
| ||Another research paper published in 2013 looked at the effects of 4βHWE on oral cancer. The researchers concluded that 4βHWE may have an "effective use in treating oral cancer with minimal adverse effects."|
High In Iron
| ||Another study published in 2011 in the Food Research International journal, looked in depth at the nutritional composition of inca berries. It found that "the presence of exclusive Physalis-gender Physalins and withanolides specific from the Solanaceae family would give the fruit of P.peruviana L.anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties, making them substances of great interest for future research." (full article).|
Inca Berries have been found to be very high in iron, comparatively to beef. Iron is essential to the distribution of oxygen throughout your body.
High in Magnesium and Zinc
| ||The same study found golden berries to also be high in Magnesium and Zinc. Magnesium is important for many functions of the body including regulating muscle function, blood pressure, blood sugar and for making protein, bone and DNA. Zinc is used to fight off bacteria and to produce DNA and make proteins.|
